Astragalus membranaceus - also known as tragacanth or Huang Qi is a traditional root from Chinese herbalism. It thrives on barren soils in northern China and Mongolia and has been highly valued there for centuries.

Tradition & plant power

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Astragalus is one of the so-called "Qi-tonifying" plants. The name Huang Qi means "yellow energy" and refers to the characteristic colour and symbolic meaning of the root.

The plant contains natural secondary plant substances such as polysaccharides, triterpene saponins, isoflavonoids and trace elements (e.g. zinc, iron, selenium), which make it a popular ingredient in nutritional and herbal medicine.

Application

• Stir 1 teaspoon (approx. 3 g) 1-2× daily into smoothies, shakes, plant drinks, juices or warm cocoa

• Also traditionally used in tea blends or herbal broths
